A 19-year-old has been slammed with an 18-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to burglary and carrying a knife in public. Jamal Chery, from Cantaloupe Mews, East Grinstead, was caught following a break-in at Fountains Close, Crawley, sparking a police manhunt.

- Chery voluntarily gave a police statement on 29 January 2024 amid the burglary probe.
- He appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 1 October facing burglary, theft, and fraud charges and was granted bail.
- Just nine days later, officers spotted him acting shady in Queens Square, Crawley.
- He bolted from a stop-and-search but was caught carrying a knife blade.
Locked Up: Jail Time for Burglary and Knife Crime
At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 13 October, Chery was charged again and thrown into custody. On 31 October at Lewes Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to all charges.
The court handed him an 18-month sentence—12 months for burglary and fraud, plus six months for carrying a knife.
