UK Nuclear Test Veterans Honoured at Special Reception

Nuclear test veterans, once unsung heroes who safeguarded the UK’s security, have finally been honoured with a dedicated reception. These brave men and women, awarded the new Nuclear Test Medal, were celebrated for their vital role in Britain’s defence during the Cold War.

Top Brass Pay Tribute at Admiralty House

The Ministry of Defence and the Office of Veterans Affairs hosted the event at Admiralty House, where Defence Secretary Grant Shapps and Veterans’ Minister Johnny Mercer met around fifty veterans. For many, it was a proud moment as they wore their Nuclear Test Medals and marched past the Cenotaph for the first time.

Grant Shapps said, “I am incredibly proud to have met veterans and heard their incredible stories. Their service is vital to our nation’s safety. The Nuclear Test Medal is a lasting symbol of the nation’s gratitude.”

Johnny Mercer added, “This medal is a fitting tribute to those who worked to preserve our national security. It’s fantastic so many veterans now finally have their medal.”

A Historic Medal for Forgotten Heroes

The Nuclear Test Medal was unveiled in November 2022 by the Prime Minister, marking 70 years since Britain’s first nuclear weapon test. It recognises military, civilian, and overseas personnel involved in the testing programmes of the 1950s and 1960s.

The honour extends to veterans from across the Commonwealth, including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Kiribati, reflecting the global effort behind Britain’s nuclear programme.

Preserving Their Legacy for Future Generations

The government is backing a £250,000 oral history project with the Universities of South Wales and Liverpool to record the life stories of 40 nuclear test veterans. Meanwhile, the Nuclear Test Community Fund has awarded £200,000 to Big Ideas, an education group working with UK and Fijian schools. Students have had the unique chance to meet veterans and hear their remarkable experiences first-hand.

Johnny Mercer recently travelled to Fiji to meet veterans and join in national celebrations, underscoring the ongoing commitment to honour these courageous individuals.

This long-overdue recognition stands as a powerful tribute to the sacrifices made by nuclear test veterans in securing the UK’s future.
