Police Appeal for Information After Man Dies Following Serious Assault in Plumstead

The Metropolitan Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a man in his 60s who succumbed to injuries sustained during a serious assault in Plumstead.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was hospitalized in critical condition on Wednesday, 19 February after the police were alerted to his situation. Despite medical efforts, he tragically passed away in hospital on Thursday, 20 February.

Timeline of Events

Investigators believe the man was assaulted in the early hours of Sunday, 16 February, outside a property on Malton Street, Plumstead. The severity of his injuries was only reported to authorities days later when he was already in hospital.

Following initial enquiries, officers arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH). The suspect has since been released on bail while police continue their investigation.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death.

Police Statement and Appeal

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said:
“Officers are continuing to investigate a serious assault in Plumstead. On Wednesday 19 February, police received a report that a man was in hospital in critical condition. Enquiries indicated that the man had been assaulted on the morning of Sunday, 16 February, outside an address on Malton Street.”

“A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and has been released on bail while enquiries continue. Sadly, the victim passed away on Thursday, 20 February. A post-mortem examination will be conducted, and our investigation remains ongoing.”

Police are urging anyone who was in the area on the morning of 16 February and may have witnessed the assault, or anyone with CCTV, doorbell camera, or dashcam footage, to come forward.
