Man Arrested Following Attempted Kidnapping in Swindon – Police Appeal for Witnesses

A 27-year-old man has been arrested following a reported attempted kidnapping incident in Swindon, prompting Wiltshire Police to launch an appeal for witnesses — particularly passengers who exited a number 5 bus on Fleming Way.

The incident occurred at around 9.30pm on Thursday, March 6, when a woman was approached by a man while walking from Princess Street to Fleming Way. The suspect allegedly followed the woman, attempting to engage her in conversation about housing and inviting her to his home. The situation escalated when the man reportedly grabbed the victim near the Leonardo Hotel, just as a bus stopped nearby.

Several people who were in the area at the time — including passengers who got off the number 5 bus to assist the victim — are now being urged by police to come forward with information that could assist the ongoing investigation.

Police Investigation Underway

The suspect, a 27-year-old man from Swindon, was arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnap and committing an offence with the intention of committing a relevant sexual offence. He has since been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said:

“We are appealing for witnesses following a suspicious incident on Fleming Way at around 9.30pm on March 6.
Several people got off a number 5 bus and intervened to help the victim — we would really like to speak with them as soon as possible. Their information could be vital to the investigation.”
