Blackheath Funfair Chaos: Police Granted Extra Stop-and-Search Powers
Police have been handed extra stop-and-search powers after a huge disturbance broke out among a large group of youths at the Blackheath Common funfair.
Road Closed as Police Tackle Disorder
Officers were called to Blackheath Common at around 3:30pm following reports of trouble involving dozens of young people. To contain the chaos, police shut down Prince Charles Road between Shooters Hill Road and Montpelier Road.
Multiple Arrests Made Amid Weapons Concerns
The Metropolitan Police confirmed several arrests related to various offences, including suspicion of carrying offensive weapons in public. The exact number of those detained remains under wraps.
Crucially, a Section 60 order has been imposed across the area. This lets officers stop and search anyone without needing reasonable suspicion — a rare and powerful move. It’s unclear how long the order will last.
“On Tuesday, 8 April, police were made aware of a large group of youths causing disorder on Blackheath Common. Officers are currently on scene dispersing youths who may still remain, while the majority were cleared throughout the afternoon,” a Met Police spokesperson said.
“There were several arrests for separate offences, including arrests for possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. A Section 60 order has been put in place within the area. Police continue to monitor the situation. Enquiries are ongoing.”
Funfair Marred by Mayhem as Police Clamp Down
The popular seasonal funfair on Blackheath Common, usually a lively attraction, was rocked by today’s disorder. Social media pictures show a heavy police presence working to restore order.
Authorities urge locals to stay calm and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.
