A routine training session turned into a nail-biting rescue for Newhaven RNLI’s volunteer crew. On Tuesday morning, they were scrambled to help a motorboat with engine failure just outside the harbour.
Quick-Thinking Rescue Near Newhaven Harbour
At 10:45am, HM Coastguard tasked the Newhaven D class inshore lifeboat D-890 Bill Hall to assist a stranded motorboat about 200 metres southwest of the Newhaven Harbour breakwater.
Towing to Safety Amid Danger
The motorboat had two passengers, both wearing lifejackets, drifting alarmingly close to busy shipping lanes. Lifeboat helm Dan Wittenberg acted fast.
“We transferred a crew member onto the casualty boat to assist with tow line setup and conduct welfare checks,” said Wittenberg. “We then initiated an astern tow until the casualty was safely inside the shelter of the harbour.”
Once secured to a pontoon, the two were handed over to the Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) and checked out in good health.
Newbie Crew Member’s First Rescue
The mission was the first ever shout for volunteer Rickie Botwright, who joined the crew in December 2024.
“It was inspiring to watch the crew manage the entire operation so professionally and compassionately,” said Botwright. “Being part of my first shout filled me with pride.”
The lifeboat was back at the station by midday, refuelled, and ready for the next call.
