Sir David Beckham Receives Knighthood in King’s Birthday Honours for Services to Sport and Charity

Football legend David Beckham has been awarded a knighthood in the King’s Birthday Honours 2025, recognising his exceptional contributions to sport and global charity work.

The former England captain, who turned 50 last month, described the moment as “immensely proud” and “truly humbling.” Born and raised in Leytonstone, east London, Beckham has become one of Britain’s most iconic athletes and a global ambassador for positive change.

“Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour,” said Sir David.

A Footballing Icon

Over his illustrious career, Beckham earned 115 caps for England, 59 of them as captain, and won league titles in four countries: England (Manchester United), Spain (Real Madrid), the USA (LA Galaxy), and France (PSG).

He played a pivotal role in Manchester United’s historic 1999 Champions League victory, becoming part of the club’s most iconic generation. The club released a statement praising the decision:

“All of us at Manchester United offer our warm congratulations to David Beckham on this richly-deserved honour. David, we salute your achievements and thank you for your tremendous contribution.”

Global Influence Beyond the Pitch

Since retiring in 2013, Beckham co-founded and now co-owns Inter Miami CF, a Major League Soccer club that gained global recognition after signing Lionel Messi.

He’s also remained active in humanitarian efforts. Beckham has been a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador since 2005 and last year became an ambassador for The King’s Foundation.

Philip Goodwin, CEO of Unicef UK, said:

“David Beckham has done an incredible amount to advocate for children’s rights over the last 20 years. We are grateful for all of his support that has done a huge amount to amplify the voices of children around the world.”

An Enduring Legacy

Beckham’s cultural impact remains strong. A 2023 Netflix documentary series chronicled his life and career, drawing global attention. He continues to be a top name among international brands and public figures.

Reflecting on the honour, Sir David added:

“It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I’m immensely proud, and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”
