Massive Flood Hits Islington After Water Main Burst
Chaos erupted in Canonbury Street, Islington, late Sunday night after a huge 36-inch water main burst, unleashing serious flooding. Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters stormed the scene to tackle the rising waters.
Floodwaters Soak Several Streets
The disaster struck just after 10pm, flooding streets up to 44cm deep. Not just Canonbury Street, but Essex Road, Elmore Street, Halliford Street, and Ecclesbourne Road were all underwater.
Residents Evacuated as Emergency Teams Spring Into Action
About 30 residents were forced from their homes and taken to a rest centre. Fire crews worked hand-in-hand with Thames Water, Islington Council, and the Met Police to protect properties and keep people safe.
Flood Barriers and Sandbags Deployed – Public Warned
Firefighters acted fast, setting up flood barriers and sandbags to steer water away from homes. They urged locals to steer clear of the area and warned drivers not to attempt driving through flooded roads.
The fire brigade logged 23 calls about the incident, sending crews from Islington, Stoke Newington, Holloway, Euston, and nearby stations. By 2:35am the situation was under control, but disruption is expected to continue throughout Monday morning.
