UK Train Services Slashed as Passenger Numbers Plunge Amid COVID-19
The UK government and rail firms have struck a deal to slash train services nationwide. This move cuts journeys as passenger numbers fall, while keeping essential routes open for key workers and vital supplies.
Fewer Trains, But Key Routes Stay Open
From Monday 23rd March, expect fewer trains across the country. Operators will focus on core services to keep workers, NHS staff, and those with medical appointments moving. Freight trains will keep delivering crucial goods, from food to fuel, to keep the nation running.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said:
“We are taking decisive action to protect the public which means reducing travel for the time being, whilst still ensuring keyworker heroes can get to their jobs to keep this nation running. For passengers in crucial roles, including emergency services and the NHS, alongside people who need medical care or to support loved ones, these changes protect the services they rely on.”
“Our railways are at the heart of this country’s transport links, and we continue to work closely with the industry to develop measures that protect operators in these challenging times.”
Rail Industry Scrambles to Protect Workers and Services
Robert Nisbet, Director at the Rail Delivery Group, urged travellers to check schedules before setting out:
“These tough measures will preserve services for key workers, keep food on shelves, and fuel flowing to power stations.” He added this step allows trains to run longer with fewer staff while keeping frontline workers safe.
“We’re watching demand closely and will tweak timetables to match needs. Check National Rail Enquiries for the latest info.”
Devolved Nations Join The Chorus With Similar Cuts
Scotland and Wales are adopting similar cuts to rail services. Scottish Transport Secretary Michael Matheson said:
“Travel will be reduced to essential journeys only. This change protects passenger services and prioritises freight to keep medicines and supplies moving.” He reinforced ongoing talks with unions to safeguard rail workers in this crisis.
Ken Skates AM, Welsh Transport Minister, confirmed a new timetable for Wales:
“Transport for Wales will reduce services to match falling passenger numbers while keeping key workers moving and supply routes open.” This plan ensures enough staff remain available to operate the network during the epidemic.
Passengers Urged To Think Twice Before Travelling
Everyone is urged to avoid non-essential travel. Reduced rail services are necessary to protect public health and keep vital workers on the move. Stay tuned for updates and always check before you travel.
