Kent Police Crack Down on Human Trafficking in Nail Bars and Car Washes

Officers teamed up with Canterbury City Council, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS), the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, and charity Stop the Traffik on World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, July 29-30, 2021. Their mission? To expose and combat human trafficking and modern slavery in local workplaces.

Over 80 Workers Warned and Advised

The taskforce visited 20 nail bars and car washes, speaking directly to more than 80 workers and managers. They handed out crucial advice on workers’ legal rights and how to spot signs of slavery. Victims and witnesses were offered a safe space to talk to officials.

KFRS even slapped a prohibition notice on a property for safety breaches during the operation — showing zero tolerance for illegal setups.

Building Trust and Gathering Intelligence

Sergeant Lee Thompson of Kent Police’s Community Safety Unit said: “Kent Police is determined to protect the most vulnerable in our society and will repeat these efforts regularly. We want workers to know their rights and who to contact if they suspect modern slavery.”

Cllr Joe Howes, Canterbury City Council’s housing lead, added: “This project helped us uncover intelligence on properties in poor or unsafe conditions, often linked with forced labour. We’ll be following up and working with colleagues across districts to tackle these issues.”
