Hit-and-Run Horror in Hatfield: Driver Jailed for Life-Changing Injuries
Just before 1pm on Saturday 22 May 2021, Mohammed Ibriham Hussain raced through a roundabout on Cavendish Way, Hatfield. He smashed into a woman in her 50s who was crossing the road and then fled the scene without stopping.

The pedestrian suffered multiple serious fractures and a collapsed lung. Her life was changed forever by the brutal collision.
Quick Police Work Nails Hit-and-Run Driver
After a thorough investigation, officers traced the black Toyota Prius involved to Hussain, who had hired the car. The vehicle was seized. Hussain later showed up at a police station but said nothing during his interview.
Justice Served: Prison and Driving Ban
- Hussain faced charges including causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop, failing to report the collision, and failing to nominate the driver.
- He pleaded guilty at St Albans Magistrates Court on 10 December 2021.
- On 25 February, St Albans Crown Court sentenced Hussain to 18 months in prison.
- He was banned from driving for 3 years and 9 months and must pass an extended driving test afterward.
“The victim is still suffering as a result of this collision, and our thoughts remain with her and her family. She suffered life-changing injuries as a result of this dangerous driving,” said Detective Constable Felicity Moody of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit. “This incident should remind drivers to be especially careful around vulnerable road users such as pedestrians.”
“I’d also like to thank PC Chris Giles from the Welwyn Hatfield South Safer Neighbourhood Team, whose quick work at the scene helped identify the vehicle involved,” she added.
