Underground Blaze Sparks Chaos in Burgess Hill Car Park
On Thursday afternoon, March 16, Burgess Hill’s Market Place car park went up in flames—well, beneath the surface at least. West Sussex Fire & Rescue confirmed an underground electrical fire sparked a swift response just after noon.
Car Park Shut, Shopping Centre Stays Open
The fire broke out around 12:34 pm, triggering an immediate dispatch of a fire engine. Firefighters quickly secured the scene, cordoning off the car park for public safety. Despite the drama below ground, the bustling shopping centre remained open for business.
To keep shoppers happy, alternative parking was provided on nearby Station Road. Fire crews used thermal imaging cameras to sniff out any hidden hot spots before calling it a day at 3:14 pm.
Power and Gas Giants Called In
With the fire extinguished, the job was handed over to UK Power Networks and Southern Gas Networks to sort out the damaged cables and restore safety.
