Epping Man Faces Court Over Racist Abuse at Protest

A man has landed in hot water after racially abusing a police officer during a protest outside The Bell Hotel in Epping.

Protester Charged with Racial Abuse and Disorderly Conduct

Darren Summerfield, 35, from Guildford, appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, charged with racially or religiously aggravated disorderly behaviour aimed at causing harassment, alarm or distress.

He also faces charges for using threatening and abusive language linked to a previous protest on 28 December last year.

Summerfield admitted to the abusive language but denied the racial aggravation charge. His trial is set for 12 February 2027 at Colchester Magistrates’ Court.

Bail Conditions: GPS Tag and YouTube Ban

Summerfield was released on strict bail conditions, including:

  • Exclusion from Epping enforced by GPS monitoring.
  • Ban on publishing content about The Bell Hotel on his YouTube channel.

A second man, 49, was also arrested for racially aggravated disorderly behaviour. He’s now on bail until 29 April.

Flares and Fireworks Seized at Chaotic Protest

Police confiscated flares and fireworks during the demonstration after locals complained about noise and anti-social behaviour.

Officers warned anyone caught using such items will face Community Protection Warnings, with potential arrests for breaches.

“These measures don’t stop people’s right to protest, but we must balance everyone’s rights,” said Chief Inspector Terry Fisher, Epping Forest District Commander.

“Local residents have told us how flares and fireworks have damaged their quality of life.”

“Peaceful protests are welcome, but please don’t bring hazardous items that risk injury and disturb the community.”
