A woman in her 80s was fatally stabbed outside her home in Plumstead. Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

Knife Attack Sparks Emergency Response

London’s Met Police were called at 8:50am on April 1 to reports of a man armed with a knife on Red Lion Place, Plumstead. Officers arrived alongside London Ambulance Service paramedics to find the elderly woman with serious stab wounds.

 


A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 8.53am today (1 April) to reports of a stabbing on Red Lion Place, Greenwich. We sent ambulance crews, a tactical response paramedic, an incident response officer, and dispatched London’s Air Ambulance. The woman was treated at the scene and rushed to a major trauma centre as a priority.”

Arrest and Investigation Underway

Another man was threatened with a knife but escaped unharmed. Shortly after 9:10am, a man in his 60s turned himself in at a nearby police station and was arrested on suspicion of murder. He is now in the hospital receiving treatment for injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Police believe the suspect and victim knew each other, and no further suspects are being sought. The woman’s family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers.

 

Police Reassure Public After Tragic Incident

Detective Inspector Dean Grice said: “This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts remain firmly with the victim’s family during this difficult time. Officers responded swiftly and coordinated closely with London Ambulance Service to provide emergency care. A full investigation is underway, and specialist officers continue to support the family.”

Detective Superintendent James Derham added: “We believe this was an isolated incident and want to reassure the community there is no wider risk. We understand the impact on locals and you will see increased police presence. If you have concerns, please speak to officers or call 101.”

The stabbing has shocked Plumstead, with emergency services praising the quick response that secured immediate aid. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and contact the police with any information.
