A 17-year-old boy has been locked up for six and a half years after a fatal hit-and-run in Stoke-on-Trent shocked the community.
Speeding BMW Mows Down Teen on Dawlish Drive
Last October, Harley Hough, 17, from Longton, was behind the wheel of a BMW 1 Series. He was racing at dangerous speeds when he overtook another car on Dawlish Drive, Bentilee. At that moment, 17-year-old Alex Woodward was crossing the street. The speeding BMW struck Alex, who was rushed to the hospital but tragically died the next morning.
Driver Flees Scene, Later Hands Himself In
Instead of stopping, Hough sped off. Two days later, he gave himself up to the police and admitted to driving without a licence or insurance. He also confessed he didn’t know the speed limit on Dawlish Drive. He faced multiple charges: causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop, failing to report the accident, driving without a licence, and lacking third-party insurance.
Justice Served at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court
On Tuesday, April 14, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court sentenced Hough to six and a half years behind bars.
“This has been a particularly distressing case which has left Alex’s family absolutely devastated,” said Detective Sergeant Christopher Wright of the Criminal Investigations Department. “I hope the conclusion of the court process today gives them a sense of closure as they continue to deal with their irreplaceable loss.”
This tragic story serves as a harsh reminder of the deadly consequences of reckless driving and the importance of taking responsibility on the road.
