Firefighters are once again battling mountain fires across the Rhondda as stubborn hotspots from previous blazes reignite and threaten surrounding land.
A significant fire has broken out again on Llanwonno Mountain, affecting around an acre of land, while a second flare-up has been reported behind Darren Park.
The latest incidents come just a week after another serious wildfire saw flames come within around 100 metres of homes on Wood Street.
Conditions are proving particularly difficult for firefighters because heat from earlier fires is believed to remain deep within the area’s peat. Hotspots can continue smouldering below the surface before wind and dry conditions allow flames to emerge again.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has also received reports of deliberate fire-setting, adding further pressure on crews dealing with the continuing wildfire risk.
Several fire appliances are reported to be on Llanwonno Mountain, with firefighters concentrating efforts on the right-hand flank and upper section of the blaze in an effort to protect a nearby farm.
The lower section is being allowed to burn towards the road, which is expected to provide a natural firebreak and prevent the flames from progressing further.
Smoke from the fires has reportedly travelled across the surrounding area, with residents as far away as Wattstown reporting smoke entering properties despite windows being closed.
People living nearby are being advised to remain indoors where possible and keep windows and doors shut, while motorists and members of the public should avoid the affected mountain areas to allow emergency crews to work safely.
The incidents remain ongoing.
