Cullompton’s Niki Rowles Crowned RAC Western Patrol of the Year
Niki Rowles from Cullompton has scooped the top prize at the RAC Western Patrol of the Year awards. The glittering ceremony took place at Silverstone, the legendary home of British motorsport. Niki beat 199 other patrols in his area to win the coveted title.
From Youngest Devon Firefighter to RAC Star
Niki’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Starting as Devon’s youngest firefighter, he later managed a local garage before joining RAC in 2002. Now 48, he rescues motorists across Exeter, Torbay, Cornwall, and Somerset, offering top-notch roadside help. He spotted the job in a local paper and hasn’t looked back since.
Going Above and Beyond for Customers
Gary Hesketh, Niki’s patrol team manager, praised his dedication: “Niki is a valuable, inspiring member of the team who always goes the extra mile for customers. His commitment is unmatched, whether supporting colleagues or working out of hours.”
This out-of-hours hustle included vital breakdown support at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, where Niki coordinated team accommodation and tackled everything from flat batteries to broken steering pipes.
Niki’s Passion: Helping Drivers in Need
On winning, Niki said: “The best part of my job is the variety. Every day is different—you never know what breakdown you’ll face, who you’ll meet, or where the day will take you. I love fixing cars roadside and the joy of getting people back on their way.”
Though nominated before, this is Niki’s first win. His motivation remains sky-high as he continues to serve drivers across the South West.
Other RAC Stars Shine at the Awards
Niki wasn’t the only RAC patrol honoured. James Jones bagged National Patrol of the Year, Steven Webster took home Northern Patrol of the Year, Richard Heathcock won the Eastern title, and Allan Pett was named Southern Patrol of the Year. A stellar night for the UK’s breakdown heroes!
