London Riot Police Crack Down on Rule-Breaking Crowds
Despite fresh national Covid-19 restrictions, large crowds took to the streets for demonstrations. Police moved in swiftly as the gatherings grew, ordering people to disperse. When many refused, officers made a wave of arrests.
Hundreds Arrested for Flouting Coronavirus Rules
The majority of those hauled in were charged with breaking the latest health regulations. Commander Jane Connors, head of the operation, said: “Our main priority this evening has been to keep Londoners safe.”
She slammed the reckless behaviour: “We are eight months into this national pandemic and frankly, there can be no excuse for people to dangerously breach regulations which are there to prevent further spread of Coronavirus.”
Police Warn More Arrests Loom
Connors added: “Tonight, a crowd of people chose to ignore the new regulations, to behave irresponsibly and meet in a dangerous manner. More than 100 of these people have now been arrested and will have to face the consequences.”
The crackdown will continue as officers work through the night. She made a final plea: “I would continue to urge people across the city to keep yourselves safe and stick to the regulations.”
