Woman Dies and Man Seriously Injured in Horror Crash on A518
A woman in her 50s has died, and a man is fighting for his life following a brutal two-vehicle smash on the A518 Wellington Road near Lilleshall on Wednesday morning.
Emergency Services Race to Scene of Devastating Collision
The crash, involving a grey BMW and a grey Audi A5, happened just after 8:45am near the Lilleshall junction. Fire crews from Newport, Telford Central, and Wellington stations were scrambled alongside paramedics and police. Shropshire Fire and Rescue sent four appliances and an Operations Officer to tackle the emergency.
Reports indicate the BMW was heading towards Newport, while the Audi was travelling towards Telford. Tragically, the female driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver suffered serious, potentially life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital. A child passenger in the Audi sustained minor injuries and was treated roadside.
Police Launch Urgent Appeal for Witnesses and Dash Cam Footage
“Our thoughts are with both families at this very difficult time. We are urging anyone who witnessed the crash, or saw either vehicle just before the collision, to come forward,” said Inspector Chris Henry of West Mercia Police.
“We’re particularly keen to hear from anyone with dash cam footage of a grey BMW heading towards Newport or a grey Audi A5 going towards Telford around 8:45am.”

Traffic Chaos and Community Shock
The A518 was shut between the Clock Tower Roundabout and the Red House until around 2pm, causing major delays as emergency services worked and investigations began.
Local residents took to social media, expressing shock and grief. One said, “Terrible news from Wellington Road this morning—thoughts with all affected.” Another voiced concerns over safety, adding, “That stretch of the A518 is dangerous, especially during rush hour. Something must be done.”
Rising Road Deaths Raise Calls for Better Safety
This tragic crash adds to a worrying trend of fatal collisions across Shropshire. Earlier this year, a fatal smash on the A5 between Telford and Shrewsbury claimed lives and left several hurt. Official Department for Transport figures reveal over 1,700 people died on UK roads in 2023, underlining the urgent need for improved safety measures and road infrastructure.
