Terrorist Linked to Enniskillen Police Station Attack Sentenced

Gabriel Meehan, 45, was today handed a 30-month prison sentence at Belfast Crown Court after admitting terrorism-related charges. His crimes are tied to an attack on Enniskillen Police Station, security scares in March 2021, and the discovery of a dangerous homemade firearm.

Details of the Attack and Investigation

The Continuity IRA claimed responsibility for the Enniskillen Police Station attack. In March 2021, multiple bomb threats were made through media outlets, prompting a thorough probe by the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Terrorism Investigation Unit, led by Detective Superintendent Griffin.

On March 17, investigators found a suspicious object near the Lough Shore Path by Riverside. It turned out to be an improvised shotgun-type weapon loaded with a spent 12-gauge cartridge showing signs of recent firing.

Evidence Found at Meehan’s Home

Further searches at Meehan’s residence uncovered crucial evidence, including a phone with a vehicle registration linked to a British Army member. Images of the improvised firearm found near Riverside were also recovered, strengthening the case against him.

Justice Served, Police Remain Vigilant

Arrested in May 2021, Meehan pleaded guilty earlier this year to gathering information useful to terrorists. He’ll be eligible for release after serving two-thirds of his sentence.

“Our Terrorism Investigation Unit remains dedicated to keeping our communities safe and preventing violence,” said Detective Superintendent Griffin. “We urge anyone with information to contact police on 101.”
