Man Dies After Brutal Assault in Northumberland
On August 23 last year, emergency staff at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington treated a man with catastrophic brain injuries. The victim was 39-year-old Andrew Peart. Despite urgent medical care, his condition worsened, and he tragically died a week later.
Violent Attack After Roadside Row
Police launched a major investigation after uncovering that Andrew’s injuries stemmed from an assault. Earlier that evening, Andrew had a heated verbal spat with a driver in a silver Mitsubishi Shogun on The Square in Guide Post, Northumberland.
The driver, 28-year-old Jake McIntyre, had slowed down as Andrew crossed the road. Following their argument, McIntyre drove off but returned shortly afterwards. Near Guide Post Working Men’s Club, he got out of his vehicle and struck Andrew with a metal tyre lever found in his car. He then punched Andrew and left him lying unconscious on the ground.
Assailant Caught and Convicted
McIntyre fled the area but was arrested two days later in Cumbria. Initially charged with assault, he faced a murder charge after a voice recording on his phone surfaced, in which he admitted his role in the attack.
After a two-and-a-half-week trial at Newcastle Crown Court, McIntyre, from Stakeford Crescent, Ashington, was found guilty of manslaughter. He remains in custody and awaits sentencing in the coming weeks.
