Driver who killed pensioner in hit-and-run finally jailed after five years of lies

Frank’s Tragic End in High-Speed Smash

John “Frank” Heneghan, 72, was fatally hit by a speeding car while crossing High Road, N15, in the early hours of 12 August 2017. The grey VW Golf, driven by 31-year-old Anop Singh, tore through the 30mph zone at between 47 and 76 mph. Frank was left critically injured at the scene. Emergency crews arrived but he died shortly after, at 1.54am.

Singh’s Web of Lies Unravels

Singh of Jessam Avenue, E5, tried to cover his tracks with a string of lies. He claimed he was asleep in the back of the car and knew nothing about the crash. Police later proved this was a blatant fabrication. Singh’s frantic 53 phone calls between 1.37am and 2.39am shattered his story. Forensic evidence confirmed he was behind the wheel, and CCTV footage showed him drinking heavily before the crash.

Justice Served After Long Battle

Singh was first convicted of perverting the course of justice in March 2021, but the dangerous driving charge remained unresolved due to COVID delays. On 11 May 2022, he was finally found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. On 13 May at Wood Green Crown Court, Singh was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He also received a 14-year driving ban and must pass an extended driving test before regaining his licence.

Tributes to a Beloved Husband and Grandfather

Frank’s family paid emotional tribute to the former farmer, builder, and publican from County Mayo, Ireland. He was married to his wife Derry for 42 years before her death in 2012. Devoted to his four children and seven grandchildren, Frank’s kindness and humour touched many. His children said:

“The defendant has shown no remorse for five years. He killed our dad and then lied to cover it up. Today this selfish man has finally been brought to justice.”

Detective Inspector Cheryl Frost said: “Frank was much loved. Singh was a coward and a liar who tried everything to avoid responsibility. Our team worked tirelessly to bring justice for Frank’s family.”
