Brutal Stabbing Sends Man into Induced Coma

A Hackney man has been locked up for savagely stabbing another man four times, leaving the victim in a coma for weeks.

Duclant Tampawo Sentenced for Grievous Assault

Duclant Tampawo, 30, from Lansdowne, Hackney, pleaded guilty to section 18 Grievous Bodily Harm at the Old Bailey on 3 February. On 7 July, he was sentenced to 14 years and one month, including a three-year extended licence.

Detective Condemns ‘Brutal Attack’

“Tampawo carried out a brutal attack, stabbing the victim multiple times which caused significant internal damage, and left him bleeding on the ground,” said Detective Constable Ben Stone, who led the investigation.

“He has never explained the reasons for this assault which left the victim in a critical condition and requiring extensive hospital treatment for a number of months. He is clearly a dangerous offender and we are pleased he is now behind bars.”

The Night of Terror in Hackney

  • In the early hours of 24 March 2019 at 03:15, police responded to reports of a man with multiple stab wounds on Lower Clapton Road.
  • The 49-year-old victim said he was attacked in nearby Ashanti Mews, a narrow alley bordering a churchyard.
  • He lost consciousness quickly and was rushed to hospital in critical condition, undergoing several operations before being placed in an induced coma for weeks.
  • Investigators found a bloodied black knife inside a red bag left in the alleyway.

CCTV Unmasks Attacker’s Movements

  • Footage showed Tampawo cycling along Mare Street at 03:05, locking his bike, then walking down Narrow Way where he approached the victim on a bench.
  • The pair were seen heading towards Ashanti Mews, the attack site.
  • Tampawo was spotted running back about 90 seconds later, then near a hostel on Lansdowne Drive.
  • On 27 March, police viewed hostel CCTV and saw Tampawo entering around 3:30am on attack day.
  • He returned while police were there and was arrested on the spot, charged with attempted murder and remanded in custody.
