Man Who Bottled Cop at Trafalgar Square Protest Avoids Jail

Gary Bridgett, 51, sparked outrage when he threw a bottle at police officer PC Hunter’s head during a protest in Trafalgar Square on September 26, 2020.

PC Hunter needed stitches after suffering a large head wound. Another officer, PS Lock, was also hit with the bottle.

Bridgett Admits Violent Assaults

At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Bridgett pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on PC Hunter and assaulting PS Lock. The protest was organised by none other than Piers Corbyn.

Judge Hands Down Suspended Sentence

Magistrate Ms Bakhshi Suki didn’t hold back, calling the offences “extremely serious.” She said:

‘Because the offences are so serious, the only appropriate option for us is custody.’

Despite this, Bridgett received a six-month prison term – suspended for 12 months – along with 30 rehabilitation days.

He was also ordered to pay £300 in damages to PC Hunter and £100 to PS Lock.
