High-Speed Police Chase Ends in Crash in Purley
Just after 9.30pm last Friday, officers tried to stop a car on Purley Downs Road – but the driver sped off instead.
Chase Cut Short Before Smash
A brief pursuit was launched but called off quickly. Moments later, the runaway vehicle smashed into a parked car on Florence Avenue, CR2. Fortunately, no one was inside the parked car at the time.
Serious Injuries and Arrest
Emergency services rushed to the scene. London Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade, and London’s Air Ambulance all attended. A 19-year-old passenger from the fleeing car was rushed to hospital and remains in serious condition.
The driver, also 19, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing serious injury. He is currently in police custody.
Investigation Underway
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been notified as standard procedure. A mandatory referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to ensure full scrutiny.
