Brian James’s death in custody was ‘no surprise’ to prison staff, inquest reveals. The 81-year-old former civil servant faced murder charges over the killing of his wife, Carol James.

From Tragedy to Court Drama

Brian James was accused of strangling his wife, Carol James, 81, at their Bexleyheath home on November 15, 2024. The horrific attack allegedly followed a violent row, where Mr James struck Mrs James with a saucepan before attempting to choke her. Carol, a retired bank clerk, was reportedly preparing for a hair appointment when the fatal assault took place.

Court heard Mr James had become obsessed with a supposed hookworm infestation. His agitation grew as Carol continued going out despite his fears. After the attack, Carol fought back, hitting Brian over the head with the same saucepan.

Emergency services were called at 8:22 am. Police and paramedics found Mrs James collapsed in bed. Despite desperate efforts, she was pronounced dead at 9:10 am. The cause of death was compression of the neck.

Prison Death Sparks Inquest

Brian James was arrested and charged with murder but was deemed too frail for Old Bailey court appearances. On February 23, 2025, he died at Medway Maritime Hospital after being transferred from Elmley Prison.

Assistant Coroner Sarah Clarke told the inquest that his death was “not a surprise” to prison officers due to his poor health. While not terminally ill, his overall condition had worsened significantly. The immediate cause of death was acute ischemia of the bowel, liver, and spleen.

Legal Case Comes to a Close

Following Mr James’s death, Judge Nicholas Heathcote Williams KC at Woolwich Crown Court formally ended the murder case. Prosecutor Nicholas Hearn noted there was no evidence supporting the alleged hookworm infestation – a belief that had apparently driven Brian’s actions.

Community in Shock and Questions Raised

  • The tragic case stunned Bexleyheath residents, who mourn the loss of both elderly neighbours.
  • Concerns surface over prosecuting elderly defendants with serious health issues.
  • The story highlights pressures faced by elderly couples and mental health challenges in later life.

What Happens Next?

A full inquest into Brian James’s death is set for October. It will probe his medical care and whether prison staff managed his health adequately given his age and frailty. The inquiry aims to shed light on care standards for vulnerable inmates.

This grim saga leaves a community reeling and family members searching for answers after a heartbreaking double tragedy.
