Leeds Man Nabbed at Heathrow with £1 Million Cannabis Haul

Nathaniel Benson, 45, from Leeds, was arrested at Heathrow Airport after Border Force officers uncovered five suitcases stuffed with over 100 kilograms of cannabis. The drugs, worth around £1 million on the street, were seized after Benson arrived from Bangkok on September 18.

Hidden Drugs in Kids’ Luggage

Officers found 160 packages of cannabis concealed inside the suitcases. Shockingly, one bag was checked in under the name of one of Benson’s children, who was travelling with him alongside a 41-year-old woman from Harrogate. The woman was also arrested but later bailed.

Court Date Set & Strong NCA Warning

Benson faces charges for importing Class B drugs and was set to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates Court on September 20. Ian Truby, Senior Investigating Officer at the National Crime Agency, said: “We continue to clamp down on anyone involved in drug smuggling. This includes both the couriers and the organised criminals behind importations like this one.”

The NCA also warned travellers about the harsh penalties for smuggling, which can include up to 14 years in prison. Cannabis seizures at UK borders from countries such as Thailand, Canada, and the US have tripled in 2024 compared to last year.

Border Force & NCA Tighten the Noose on Smugglers

The NCA and Border Force say they will keep working together to dismantle drug smuggling rings and bring offenders to justice. This arrest is a stark reminder: drug smuggling is a serious crime with heavy consequences.
