Man Charged Over Racial Abuse at Epping Protest

A man has been charged following reports that an Essex Police officer was racially abused during a protest outside The Bell Hotel in Epping.

Darren Summerfield Faces Serious Charges

Darren Summerfield, 35, from Guildford, appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (10 February). He is charged with racially or religiously aggravated disorderly behaviour, intended to cause harassment, alarm, or distress.

The charge relates to an incident during a protest outside The Bell Hotel on Sunday, 8 February. Summerfield is also accused of using threatening, abusive, or insulting behaviour at a previous protest on 28 December last year.

Admission and Bail Conditions

During the hearing, Summerfield admitted to the threatening behaviour but denied the racially or religiously aggravated offence. The court heard the accusations stem from reports of racial abuse aimed at an Essex Police officer during the protest.
