Dramatic Siege Rocks Walthamstow Street
Armed police were scrambled to Stow Crescent, Walthamstow, at about 10am last Friday after a man threatened to harm himself inside his home. Family members dialled 999, alerting officers that the man was alone and armed.
Hours of Tense Talks End in Gunfire
Skilled negotiators spent hours trying to calm the man, who warned he would shoot anyone trying to enter. At around 2pm, a loud bang was heard from inside. Armed officers stormed the property, and shots were fired. The exact events leading to the gunfire are still under investigation.
Man Seriously Injured and Hospitalised
Emergency crews treated the injured man at the scene before rushing him to hospital. His wounds are serious but not life-threatening. He remains in hospital with life-changing injuries.
Police Speak Out Amid Ongoing Probe
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said: “Our thoughts are with the injured man and his family. We know this will alarm the community in Walthamstow and beyond. Incidents involving police firearms discharge are extremely rare. “It’s vital the Independent Office for Police Conduct fully investigates. Until then, we cannot comment further. “Armed officers face dangerous situations daily, responding to around 4,000 calls a year and making split-second decisions to keep the public safe. I thank them for their bravery and professionalism. “Officers remain on scene. We thank local residents for their cooperation. The cordon is in place, the situation contained, and there is no wider risk to the public.”
The Directorate of Professional Standards has handed the case to the IOPC, which is now leading an independent investigation. Police urge residents to avoid the area while the cordons remain.
