Serial Paedophile Mark Burgess Jailed for 40 Years After Decades of Abuse

Mark Burgess, 68, has been slammed as a “conniving and exploitative serial paedophile” after being sentenced to 40 years behind bars at Portsmouth Crown Court today (Wednesday 30 June). The former choirmaster’s sick abuse spree spanned nearly four decades, targeting 13 children under 16, all linked to church choirs and schools.

Choirmaster’s Sickening Reign of Terror Exposed

Burgess preyed on vulnerable children while posing as a trusted music teacher and choir leader. Between 1975 and 2009, he exploited his roles at All Saints Church in Portsmouth, Westbourne Choir in Sussex, Portsmouth City Boys’ School, and St John’s Church in Westbourne.

  • 26 counts of indecent assault
  • 15 counts of gross indecency with a child
  • 4 counts of buggery
  • 1 count of attempted indecent assault
  • 2 counts of sexual activity with a child

The vile assaults took place in chilling locations — during piano lessons at his home, in church vestries, his car, school music rooms, and even on choir trips out of county.

Survivors Show Courage, Reveal Horrific Impact

After decades of silence, the brave survivors stepped forward to expose Burgess’s abuse. In court, their harrowing testimonies painted a vivid picture of manipulation, grooming, and calculated cruelty.

“This person helped me use my voice to make beautiful music, but I would become too ashamed to ever use it again.”

Police and NSPCC Praise Brave Victims, Warn Others to Speak Out

Detective Inspector Adam Edwards condemned Burgess’s “heinous and evil acts,” insisting the paedophile’s manipulation and abuse of trust would never happen again. “These brave survivors have shown incredible strength and ensured this monster can’t harm anyone else,” he said.

An NSPCC spokesperson added: “Burgess brutally abused his position of trust, but this case shows no abuser is beyond justice, no matter how long ago or who they are.”

Operation Marmion, Hampshire Constabulary’s dedicated team tackling historic child abuse, urges anyone affected to come forward. Victims can call police on 101, talk to NSPCC on 0808 800 5000 or email [email protected]. Children can reach out confidentially via Childline on 0800 1111.
