Off-duty Chief Inspector Nick Sparkes sprang into action after spotting a man linked to two assaults in Ashford earlier that day.

Hero Cop Nabs Suspect in Town Centre

On the morning of Saturday 21 May 2022, Nick Sparkes was off-duty and out in town when he recognised a man believed to be involved in two violent attacks.

Quick to act, the District Commander detained the suspect until on-duty officers arrived to make the arrest.

Man Charged Over Ashford Assaults

The man, identified as 51-year-old Mark McQuade from Leysdown Road, Sheerness, now faces serious charges. He’s been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault.

McQuade appeared at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Monday 23 May and was granted bail ahead of a September hearing at Thanet Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 14 September.
