118 Arrested as Protestors Storm Grand National
Men and women aged 18 to 66 were arrested after disrupting the Grand National at Aintree. They came from all over the UK, including Kent, Southampton, London, Essex, Swansea, Falkirk, and Glasgow.
Charges Include Conspiracy and Drug Possession
The 118 suspects face serious allegations such as conspiracy to cause public nuisance, obstructing highways, and possession of controlled drugs. Of those arrested, 65 were taken into custody and are now being processed. They will be bailed pending further enquiries.
Race Briefly Delayed Amid Unruly Protest
Assistant Chief Constable Paul White revealed the race was halted temporarily while officers tackled protestors trying to breach the extensive 5km perimeter of the racecourse.
“The safety and wellbeing of everyone is paramount at large events like this, including those protesting,” said ACC White.
He added that about 70,000 people attended the event, which went on safely despite the brief disruption. Officers and security staff acted swiftly and effectively to contain the situation.
Police Praise Public and Partners for Support
“We respect peaceful protest, but criminal acts aimed at disrupting the race will not be tolerated,” warned ACC White.
He also thanked members of the public for their patience and support. Mutual aid officers from Greater Manchester, North Wales, Cheshire, and Durham Police, alongside Aintree racecourse, security teams, and the Jockey Club, were praised for their vital help.
