Cop Injured Head-First in Massive Eid Brawl
Police officer suffers head injury while breaking up huge fight at Eid celebrations in Ilford.
Chaos Erupts at Ilford Lane
Police were bombarded with emergency calls around 11.33pm reporting a large crowd blocking Ilford Lane near Dudley Road. About 150-200 people had gathered for Eid celebrations, causing traffic chaos.
Officers tried to calm the crowd and asked them to disperse peacefully. But as people started to leave, a violent scrap broke out between two groups on Rutland Road.
Officer Injured in the Fray
When police stepped in to stop the fight, one officer was hit and suffered a head injury. A man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and assaulting an emergency worker.
On the way to custody, the suspect fell ill and was rushed to a London hospital as a precaution. His injuries are reported as not serious. Police investigations are ongoing.
Met Chief Slams Violence Amid Celebrations
“While we accept that celebrations take place, and we have no desire to spoil them for the community, if they descend into violence we absolutely will step in,” said Chief Superintendent Stephen Clayman.
“We received numerous calls from concerned members of the public. Large groups like this during a pandemic are worrying, and everyone must follow social distancing rules.
“After a long day protecting the public, one of my officers ended up with a head injury. This is beyond unacceptable. Anyone who assaults police will be arrested and face court.”
