Rapist Jailed for 20 Years After Victims’ Bravery
Two courageous women who suffered abuse as children have helped lock up their attacker for 20 years. William Shepherd, 59, was found guilty of two rapes, 11 indecent assaults, and nine counts of child indecency.
Six-Day Trial Reveals Harrowing Abuse
During last month’s six-day trial, jurors heard how Shepherd committed horrifying acts for his “perverted pleasure.” On September 30, the jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict. Judge Ray Singh delayed sentencing to allow victims to submit impact statements detailing their trauma.
Sentence and Protection Orders Handed Down
Shepherd, from Hareson Road, Newton Aycliffe, was sentenced yesterday. He must serve at least two-thirds of his 20-year term before parole consideration. He’s also slapped with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and sex offender notification.
Police Praise Victims’ Courage
PC Simon Spellman, who led the probe, praised the women’s bravery. He said: “This has been an absolutely traumatic time for both victims who have shown incredible bravery by coming forward and determination to see the case through.”
He added: “This lengthy investigation has hopefully brought some closure to the victims so they can rebuild their lives.”
Police urge anyone suffering abuse to speak up. If you believe you have been a victim, call 101—or 999 in an emergency.
