Isle of Wight Heroes Honoured at Police Awards
Nearly 40 locals and police officers were celebrated at a star-studded Isle of Wight awards bash. Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney and Superintendent Sarah Jackson handed out awards to 38 members of the public and police family for their outstanding contributions to island safety.
Special Ceremony Recognises Island’s Bravest
The event at Newport Congregational Church on 23 April applauded efforts to help the community. Among the winners were 19 police constables and PCSOs, 11 civilians, and even police dog Chase. Seven police cadets also received attestation certificates, marking the start of their policing journeys.
Detective Constable Adam Gamble grabbed the spotlight for his heroic handling of a tense firearms incident on the island.
Hero Cop’s Tireless Effort Saves the Day
Back in the early hours of 4 October, officers responded to a fraught domestic dispute in Sandown. A man brandished what appeared to be a firearm at a woman and police. Thanks to quick thinking, officers used baton rounds to safely detain the 45-year-old suspect, who was armed with a BB gun imitation.
“DC Gamble was determined to keep ownership of the investigation, working a 15-hour shift to ensure charges were made,” said Superintendent Jackson.
Despite an already heavy workload, DC Gamble led the investigation with meticulous care. His detailed case helped secure a charging decision, with the man eventually jailed for 32 months for possession of an imitation firearm and driving under the influence.
Community Spirit Shines Through
Superintendent Jackson praised the collective effort: “These awards show how the whole community, including officers and public, work hand in hand to keep people safe.” Many recipients helped vulnerable islanders or provided crucial medical aid.
Chief Constable Pinkney echoed the sentiment, saying, “Meeting the cadets was inspiring. They’re on an exciting path that might lead to future roles in policing or community support.”
She added that volunteer cadets and citizens play a vital role in upholding safety across the Isle, making awards nights like this essential to recognise their hard graft.
