Human Rights Lawyer Annabel Rook Stabbed to Death Before Devastating Gas Explosion
The family of Annabel Rook, a beloved human rights lawyer and mother of two, have paid tribute to her “truly wonderful” life after she was tragically stabbed to death in her North London home. A gas explosion then tore through the property shortly after.
Tragic Discovery on Dumont Road
Annabel, 46, was found fatally injured at her terraced house on Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, just before 5am on Tuesday, 17 June. Emergency services arrived amid reports of a gas explosion but soon uncovered the grim truth — Annabel had been stabbed prior to the blast.
Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Her two children, aged seven and nine, were not at home and are safe.
A Life Devoted to the Vulnerable
Annabel’s family remembered her as a woman dedicated to helping those in need. They said in a heartfelt statement:
“We have lost our beautiful daughter, sister, friend and mother. Annabel was a truly wonderful woman. She touched the hearts of so many.”
She co-founded MamaSuze, a London charity supporting women survivors of forced displacement and gender-based violence. Through creative arts workshops and community initiatives, she helped empower vulnerable women.
Annabel also worked extensively in refugee camps across Africa, believing passionately that “the ability to play and create should be a fundamental human right.” On her LinkedIn, she wrote:
“I have been working with marginalised and displaced people for over 20 years… I aim to enable people to be creative and help them find their voice.”
Suspect in Custody After Arrest
A 44-year-old man known to Annabel was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was taken to hospital for treatment, has since been discharged, and remains in police custody. The Metropolitan Police confirmed no other suspects are being sought.
‘Like a Bomb Going Off’ — Neighbours Recall Horrific Blast
Residents reported hearing a massive explosion around 5am. Neighbour Bhikha Maisuria, 68, said:
“There was a ‘boom’ like a bomb going off. Glass was flying everywhere. It was horrific. The lady who died was very nice and looked like a great mother. We are all devastated.”
Photos show the Victorian terraced home blackened and badly damaged by fire and the blast. Floral tributes have flooded the scene as friends and locals mourn.
MamaSuze Charity ‘Devastated’ by Loss
The charity Annabel co-founded released a moving tribute:
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved co-founder. Annabel was a force for good in the world, dedicating her life to supporting survivors. She brought art, creativity and joy to women fleeing violence and trauma. We are in a state of profound shock.”

Annabel’s family have asked for privacy as they grieve, stating:
“We would really appreciate it if our privacy could be respected.”
