Brothers’ Violent Rampage Ends Behind Bars

Glass-smashing petrol station raid

Stephen and John McCabe kicked off their day of terror on April 4 last year by smashing through the glass doors of a petrol station in Gateshead in the early hours. They threatened a terrified shop assistant who had to take refuge in a back office while the duo swiped alcohol and vapes.

Drunken attack and ear-biting horror

After a boozy stop at their sister’s home, Stephen launched a savage attack on another man, biting off part of his ear. The mayhem was just getting started.

Sunderland chaos and terrifying knife threat

Later that afternoon, the brothers rampaged through Sunderland city centre, yelling abuse outside a hostel. After being kicked out, they smashed its windows. Their spree escalated when they approached a driving instructor’s car mid-lesson. John – brandishing a knife – threatened to stab the pupil if she didn’t get out. The victims fled as the McCabes hurled glass beer bottles, shattering the windscreen.

Swift arrests and harsh sentences

Northumbria Police arrested the violent pair shortly after, despite being assaulted themselves.

  • Stephen McCabe, 36, of Sunderland, pleaded guilty to burglary, unlawful wounding, two counts of criminal damage, attempted robbery, and assaulting emergency workers. He was locked up for six years at Newcastle Crown Court on April 21.
  • John McCabe, 35, of Gateshead, admitted burglary, two counts of criminal damage, attempted robbery, possession of a bladed weapon, and assault on emergency workers. He was jailed for four years and four months.

Justice served after a violent day of crime that shocked communities across Northumbria.
