Ex-Sussex Cops Cleared of Common Assault
Two former Sussex Police officers, Daniel Lott and Daniel Groves, have had their assault convictions quashed by Hove Crown Court. Their successful appeal means the convictions no longer stand.
The Incident and Initial Conviction
The officers were originally charged with common assault following an altercation in Bognor on May 29, 2022. They were transporting a man to custody when the Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges. Both were found guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on May 15, 2023.
Dismissal and Appeal Victory
After their conviction, Lott and Groves were swiftly dismissed from Sussex Police at an accelerated misconduct hearing in July 2023. Refusing to accept the verdict, they appealed. On October 8, 2024, Hove Crown Court upheld their appeals, clearing their names and overturning the previous ruling.
This dramatic reversal highlights the twists in justice faced by the officers after their initial fall from grace.
