Chaos at New Year’s Eve celebrations as car crashes into crowd near Madison Square Garden
New Year’s Eve took a terrifying turn in New York City when a car ploughed into revellers near Madison Square Garden, injuring at least nine people, including three NYPD officers. The horrifying crash happened as crowds were dispersing from Times Square, just after the iconic ball drop welcoming 2024.
Mass Casualty Incident Declared on Busy NYC Streets
The smash occurred at the busy intersection of West 34th Street and 9th Avenue. Emergency services quickly declared a mass casualty incident. Police responded instantly after receiving a 1:40 am distress call as the packed streets started to empty following New Year’s festivities.
Eyewitnesses say the vehicle mounted the pavement, striking civilians and police officers before coming to a stop. The chaotic scene involved at least three vehicles—two black cars and a yellow taxi caught up in the wreck.
Driver in Custody After Police Chase
Authorities have taken a 44-year-old male driver into custody. Reports reveal police were pursuing the vehicle just moments before the collision. The suspect is currently held at Bellevue Hospital.
Grim footage shows a man being carried away on a stretcher, conscious but injured. Police remained on site well into the early hours, cordoning off the area and treating the wounded.
Heightened Security Collides With Real Danger
The NYPD had a heavy presence at Times Square this New Year’s Eve. Despite no specific threats, Mayor Eric Adams ordered extra security measures, creating an expanded “buffer zone” around the celebration to prevent any potential demonstrations.
This chilling crash serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement face at large public events. Just two years ago, a machete attack near Times Square injured three officers, underscoring the constant need for vigilance.
