M11 Shut Both Ways After Lorry Packed with Migrants Found in Essex
The M11 motorway in Essex has been slammed shut in both directions after police discovered a trailer crammed with migrants on Wednesday evening. The closure caused chaos, trapping hundreds of drivers.
Police Lockdown After Shocking Find
Essex Police sprang into action between junctions 8 and 9 following the discovery. The rear doors of the trailer were forced open, but two migrants escaped on foot. A police helicopter was launched to hunt down the fugitives.
Traffic Chaos as Major Diversions Put in Place
- Northbound traffic: exit at Junction 8, head west on A120, then north on A10 to rejoin M11 at Junction 10.
- Southbound traffic: leave at Junction 10 onto A10 south, then east on A120, rejoining M11 at Junction 8.
Highways England closed the motorway following Essex Police’s request, with drivers stuck in standstill traffic.
Medical Help on Scene, Driver Questioned
Police called in paramedics and a HART team to tend to the migrants who had been trapped inside the trailer for some time. They received water and medical treatment on site.
Officials say the migrants will now be handed over to immigration authorities. The lorry driver has been questioned, but it’s unclear if any arrests have been made.
Essex Police and Border Force have been contacted for comment.
