Firefighters Save Seven Ducklings Trapped in Newcastle Storm Drain

On Sunday morning, Newcastle Central Community Fire Station’s Blue Watch team faced an unusual rescue mission. At just after 10am, they were called to Castle Leazes Student Accommodation in Spital Tongues after a Newcastle University student spotted seven ducklings stuck down a storm drain.

Worried Mammy Duck Leads Firefighters to the Rescue

Arriving on scene, firefighters found a anxious mother duck circling and flapping her wings beside the drain, surrounded by concerned students and onlookers. The distressed quacking had first alerted the students, who quickly located the tiny trapped ducklings beneath the grate.

Quick Work and Compassion Save the Day

The fire crew scraped away muck around the drain and used a crowbar to lift the grate. One by one, the seven ducklings were carefully freed and reunited with their relieved mother. The students who raised the alarm were praised for their quick thinking and compassion.

It’s not every Sunday morning Newcastle firefighters get to save seven little lives! The mother and her lucky ducklings waddled off to enjoy the rest of their day in the Toon. The crew left the scene by 10:30am, proud of their feathered rescue.
