Teen Hacker Nabbed in Major UK-US Cybercrime Sting
A 17-year-old boy from Walsall, West Midlands, has been arrested for his alleged role in a global cybercrime gang. The group is accused of stealing huge sums through ruthless ransomware attacks, hitting major targets like MGM Resorts.
Massive Three-Year Investigation Ends in Arrest
The teenager was arrested last Thursday, suspected of blackmail and breaches of the Computer Misuse Act. Police seized multiple digital devices from him, which are now under forensic scrutiny. He has been released on bail pending further investigations.
This breakthrough comes after a complex three-year probe involving West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCUWM), the National Crime Agency (NCA), and the FBI. The international cyber hacking ring targeted major firms worldwide, extorting millions through cyber extortion.
MGM Resorts Targeted in Cyber Ransom Attack
MGM Resorts, owner of iconic Vegas hotels like Bellagio, MGM Grand, and Mandalay Bay, was a prime victim. Hackers used ransomware to cripple the firm’s networks and demand hefty ransoms. MGM owns 31 hotel and gaming resorts globally, making it a high-value target.
Law Enforcement and Tech Giants Send Warning
Detective Inspector Hinesh Mehta of ROCUWM said: “This arrest has been made following a complex investigation which stretches overseas to America. We’ve worked closely with the National Crime Agency and the FBI. These cyber groups target big organisations for ransom and have made off with large sums worldwide. We want to send a clear message: we will find you. It’s simply not worth it.”
Bryan Vorndran, Assistant Director of the FBI Cyber Division, added: “Today’s arrest shows the power of international cooperation. The FBI and partners will relentlessly pursue cybercriminals targeting American companies, wherever they hide.”
MGM Resorts expressed solidarity with law enforcement. They praised shutting down systems and refusing ransom payments, stressing: “The message to criminals was clear: it’s not worth it.”
Microsoft also hailed the arrest as a strong message to cybercriminals. They vowed to work alongside law enforcement and private sector partners to fight cyber threats and make the internet safer for all.
The Power of Global Collaboration Against Cybercrime
This arrest highlights the crucial role of international teamwork in cracking down on cybercrime rings. Law enforcement agencies continue to ramp up efforts to protect organisations and individuals from growing cyber threats.
