West Sussex Fire Service is battling a huge fire at the Household Waste Recycling Site in Westhampnett, near Chichester. Thick smoke is drifting southeast, making it visible from the busy A27.

Residents nearby are urged to keep doors and windows shut to avoid smoke inhalation. Firefighters have deployed four engines and a control unit to tackle the fiery mess.

Fire Under Control but Overnight Watch Continues

The blaze, involving a staggering 200 tonnes of waste, was brought under control by 8:30pm according to West Sussex Fire Service. They have since scaled back to one fire engine, which will remain on site overnight to monitor the situation.
