Body Found in River Dee in Search for Missing Woman

Bangor-on-Dee, Wrexham – Police have recovered a body from the River Dee amid the desperate hunt for 39-year-old Lucy Charles. She vanished on December 22, 2023, last seen on CCTV strolling past the Royal Oak pub in Bangor-on-Dee at 5:34 pm.

Family Informed as Police Await Formal ID

North Wales Police confirmed the grim discovery but have yet to officially identify the body. Lucy’s family have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. Chief Inspector Stephen Roberts expressed his sympathies: “The local coroner has also been informed. My thoughts are with Lucy’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Massive Search Effort Before the Tragic Find

A full-scale search was launched involving police, mountain rescue, fire services, and a helicopter. Underwater teams scoured the flood-swollen River Dee after fears Lucy may have accidentally fallen in amid heavy rain. Recent evidence suggests she was swept away by the swollen river, with no signs of foul play or intentional harm.

River Conditions Hamper Ongoing Investigation

Lucy’s partner, Ian Beech, thanked the emergency services but admitted high water levels made search efforts tough. Since Lucy’s disappearance, the River Dee has risen sharply, forcing divers to retreat. Authorities remain hopeful that as water levels drop, more details will come to light.

North Wales Police have warned the public to stay clear of the dangerous, flooded river. They continue to investigate and renew their appeal for anyone with information to come forward. Lucy was last seen wearing a navy padded coat, hi-vis vest, khaki leggings, and black boots.
