Bangladesh Train Crash Kills 17, Injures Over 100
A deadly train smash in northeastern Bangladesh has claimed at least 17 lives and injured more than 100. The disaster struck in Bhairab on Monday afternoon when a cargo train ploughed into the back of a passenger service.
Collision Causes Passenger Carriages to Derail
The cargo train, heading to Chattogram, smashed into the rear two carriages of the Dhaka-bound Egarosindhur Godhuli Express around 3:30 pm local time (09:30 GMT). Two passenger coaches were derailed, leaving a scene of devastation.
Rescue Teams Battle to Save Victims
“We have recovered 17 bodies. More than 100 people were injured,” said Bhairab government administrator Sadiqur Rahman.
Local police chief Rasel Sheikh confirmed the death toll could rise. More than 50 seriously injured passengers were rushed to hospitals as rescuers struggled to free more victims trapped beneath overturned coaches.
Television footage showed chaos at the crash site, with hundreds scrambling amid twisted wreckage. Railway services in the area were immediately suspended while authorities tackle the aftermath.
