Hit-and-Run Horror: Rory Flung 30ft by Speeding Car
On July 20, 2017, Rory’s world was shattered when a speeding car mounted the pavement and struck him from behind, sending him flying 30ft into the road. The driver didn’t stop — vanishing and leaving Rory in a critical state.
Hero Doc by Chance: London Air Ambulance Saves the Day
By pure luck, Dr Matt Mak, a consultant with London’s Air Ambulance, was nearby in Clapham, heading to lunch, when he saw the terrifying crash unfold. Without a pause, he called emergency services, demanding London’s Air Ambulance trauma team.
“It was horrific to see – almost as if time slowed down as the car mounted the pavement and threw him into the road,” said Dr Mak. “I felt helpless without my usual kit, but I supported his airway and kept his spine stable until help arrived.”
Within minutes, the iconic rotor blades of the air ambulance buzzed overhead, bringing expert medics to Rory’s side.
Brutal Injuries, Tough Road to Recovery
Rory suffered devastating wounds: compound fractures to his left femur and right humerus, fractured vertebrae, broken scapula, and a flail chest so severe part of his rib cage detached. Despite brain bleed and jaw damage requiring TMJ replacement surgery, Rory fought through intense rehab.
“I had appointments and rehab for almost every part of my body,” Rory said. “I’m doing well but I’m not the same person I was – and that’s tough to accept. But I’m learning to accept my weaknesses.”
Love and Hope After Tragedy
Today, Rory lives in southeast 1 with his dog and is engaged to his partner Andy. The couple plans to marry in New Zealand this February after a romantic proposal in Wales.
Rory’s survival story is a powerful tribute to resilience and the life-saving skill of London’s Air Ambulance crew. Against all odds, Rory has embraced a new chapter full of love and hope.
