Hand Sanitiser Makers Get Fast-Track Access to Denatured Alcohol Amid Coronavirus Crisis

HMRC Speeds Up Approvals to Tackle Sanitiser Shortage

Manufacturers of hand sanitisers and gels are getting a helping hand from HMRC during the coronavirus outbreak. As demand for alcohol-based sanitising products soars, shortages have hit the market hard. To keep supplies flowing, HMRC is fast-tracking applications for access to denatured alcohol — a key ingredient in hand gels.

Millions of Extra Litres Approved for Production

In just three weeks, HMRC has bumped up the authorised volume of denatured alcohol available to sanitiser producers by a whopping 2.5 million litres. This boost will help manufacturers ramp up production and meet the skyrocketing demand sparked by COVID-19.

Helping Manufacturers Deliver in a Crisis

“By enabling the fast-tracking of authorisations to use denatured alcohol, we are giving manufacturers the potential to produce the extra hand sanitiser gel needed during the outbreak,” said an HMRC spokesperson. “We hope this support helps meet the sudden spike in demand.”

HMRC says it will continue working closely with the industry, applying existing standards and criteria to ensure licences are granted swiftly while maintaining safety and quality controls.
