Sadiq Khan’s Bold Move to Ban Traffic on Oxford Street

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has unveiled fresh plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street, aiming to slap a traffic ban on one of the capital’s busiest shopping hotspots. This daring move forms part of a wider regeneration scheme designed to breathe new life into the world-famous retail strip for shoppers, tourists, residents, and workers alike.

Deputy PM Angela Rayner Throws Support Behind Plan

Khan’s Labour-led initiative has scored backing from the Government, with Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner endorsing the pedestrian-only vision. Rayner insists the plan will give Oxford Street “the boost it needs” to reclaim its status as a premier shopping destination.

“Oxford Street was once the jewel in the crown of Britain’s retail sector,” Khan said. “But it has suffered hugely over the last decade. Urgent action is needed to give the nation’s most famous high street a new lease of life.”

He added, “I want Oxford Street to once again become the leading retail destination in the world. This transformation will show how cooperation between City Hall and the Government can build a better London for everyone.”

From Blocked Bid to Backed Proposal

Back in 2018, Khan’s attempt to ban traffic on Oxford Street hit a brick wall when Conservative-led Westminster City Council blocked the plan. This time, however, with Rayner onside, the proposal stands a much better chance.

The pedestrianisation is part of a broader regeneration plan focused on job creation, boosting economic activity, and revitalising London’s night-time economy.

What’s Next for Oxford Street?

  • A statutory consultation period and review by the London Assembly must come first.
  • Rayner, as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities & Local Government, must approve the creation of a new Mayoral Development Corporation to drive the project.

If given the green light, Oxford Street could soon undergo a major transformation, setting a new standard for urban shopping experiences worldwide.
