Minivan and Tram Crash Sparks Major Emergency on Kingston Road
A high-impact collision between a minivan and a tram has triggered a full emergency response near South Wimbledon tonight. The smash happened just before 4pm on Tuesday, August 26, sending all three emergency services rushing to the scene.
Serious Injuries Feared As Ambulances Speed Away
Eyewitnesses reported seeing at least one ambulance race from the crash site with blue lights flashing, raising fresh fears of serious injuries. The Merton Cycling Campaign, who first flagged the incident on social media, say the minivan driver may have ignored traffic signals, causing the collision.
With the tram heading towards Wimbledon station during a busy period, many passengers were reportedly standing—putting them at greater risk of injury during the crash. At least two ambulances have since been spotted leaving the scene.
Road Closures and Chaos as TfL Halts Tram Services
Transport for London confirmed that tram services on Kingston Road are suspended. The road—and 1 Road—remain closed in both directions.
Traffic chaos is spreading, snarling Dorset Road and the already congested South Wimbledon junction, which is currently hit by roadworks. Drivers and bus commuters are warned to brace for lengthy delays throughout the evening rush hour.
Police Probe Underway, Updates Expected
The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service have been approached for comment. More details on the number of casualties and the crash cause will be released as the investigation unfolds.
