A 78-year-old pensioner sparked a huge rescue mission after trying to take a shortcut across a creek on Hayling Island — and ended up stuck in the mud.
Pensioner’s Shortcut Ends in Muddy Mess
The pensioner, known locally as David, has lived on the island for over 40 years. This afternoon, he drove his blue automatic Nissan off the slipway on Eastoke Avenue straight into the creek, thinking it would be quicker.
But the car got stuck, and when David got out, he became trapped in the thick mud.
Fire Crews and Locals Join Forces
Four fire crews from Hayling Island, Cosham, and a specialist water rescue unit from Fareham rushed to the scene. Locals were quick to help the stranded pensioner before the emergency services arrived.
Medics from South Central Ambulance treated David on the spot, while firefighters used specialist winching equipment to free the car from the muck.
After a Quick Brew, He Was Back on the Road
Once rescued and given a cup of tea, David climbed back into his Nissan and drove off. Some locals reckon it might be time for him to hang up his keys for good.
